Learn How to Referee Wheelchair Rugby |
|
Any individual who is willing to learn the rules of the game, become familiar with the casebook and invest the time can train to become a wheelchair rugby referee. As a referee you are required to attend a referee clinic at least once a year, and maintain a certain number of games a year.
Referee Clinics
Referees clinics are run by experienced referees. It is preferable that clinics are run in conjunction with a tournament or league matches so that the trainee referees also have the opportunity to referee games, be observed and receive feedback to improve their skills. There are three categories of clinics:
-
Basic Clinic: This is for new referees who have familiarised themselves with the rules. They may have done some refereeing in a training situation. The clinic leader will explain the rules in detail and the mechanics of refereeing. Participants will be supervised during game play.
-
Intermediate Clinic: Referees attending these clinics will be refereeing for about 1-2 years. The focus at these clinics is on the interpretation of the rules and ensuring good refereeing mechanics. These clinics are mainly practical with participants being observed refereeing games. Participants can expect a written test during the clinic to ensure their understanding of the rules
-
Advanced Clinic: This clinic is aimed at referees who are either International referees or about to take the test for their international licence. Focus is on the finer details of the game and ensuring a consistent interpretation of the rules.
Referee Certification
-
National Referee: will have completed a basic and/or intermediate referee clinic. These referees are qualified to referee in domestic club competitions but in their own country and in their own Zone
-
International Referee (Zone): will have completed an advanced clinic. Referees can officiate at international tournaments within their Zone e.g. at European Championships/Europa Cup
