Wheelchair Rugby is a truely international sport. It is currently played in over 24 countries, and continues to be one of the fastest growing paralympic sports in the world today. The rules of Wheelchair Rugby are governed by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation.
Basic Rules
• Four players from each team are allowed on the court at a time.
• Players are given a classification (0.5 to 3.5) based on their functional ability.
• The classification points of the four players on the court must total no more than 8.0 points.
• The game is played on a regulation-sized basketball court with some minor changes.
• A game consists of 4 x 8 minute period with a 2 minute break between periods and a 5 minute halftime.
• 3 minutes overtime is added if the scores are tied at the end of regulation play.
• Each team is allowed 4 timeouts of 30 seconds and two coaches timeouts of one minute per game.
• Players have 40 seconds to advance into their opponents half and score.
• A player has 12 seconds to advance the ball into the opponents half-court.
• The player with the ball has unrestricted pushes, but must pass or dribble the ball every 10 seconds or a turnover is awarded.
• While the offence is trying to advance the ball, the defence is trying to take it away and keep the opposing team from scoring.
• Fouls are assessed and penalties can include awarding of a goal, a timed penalty or a turnover.
• To score a point, a player must cross the goal line with 2 of their 4 wheels while retaining possession of the ball.
